A listener's tast for a singer is complex. To greatly simplify, timbre, register, color, pitch (perhaps overrated in estimation), dramatic talent, all play a part. I cannot listen to Callas- she is for me like fingernails on a blackboard. But I do not quarrel with those who prize her. Compatiblity (for want of a better word) between singer and listener is hardly ever considered. Everyone wants their favotite to be "the best." That being said, Lucia Popp is my most prized soprano. If you care for her work, this is an Alladin's cave, from her breakthrough Queen of the Night to Four Last songs and lieder. My favorites, not suprising among her admirers, are "O Silver Moon," her own favorite, and the the pieces from Grieg and Orff. Others may well prefer her Mozart (the best example is not on this recording but is on You Tube with Gundula Janowicz.) For anyone who loves a clear pure voice, I cannot recommend this wonderful and comprehensive collection too highly. Technically a wonderful cd.
